February 2023 – Manager as Support

Hello Managers!

We’re continuing our series on creative ways to engage your team.  For February, we’re placing a focus on holistic support.  People everywhere are experiencing additional stress as a result of the current recession. In fact, nearly 2/3 of the workforce are reporting feelings of moderate burnout (Cision). As a Manager, how can you support your team in the workplace? How can you alleviate burnout and effectively engage your team?

Truvelop Tip: Manager as Support

When periods are high-stress or hectic, it can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands.  However, teams that take the time to reflect and interact on a human level during a simple check-in or an employee assessment are going to be more productive overall. Try asking these 3 questions to gauge how your team is doing:

On a scale of 1-10, how engaged are you currently feeling by your work? Know how your team is feeling. How much support do they need? Are they disengaged by their work, or is there something outside of work that is causing their disengagement?

What percentage of your work do you currently find inspiring? Knowing what inspires your team is important. How can you further incorporate that kind of work into their role? When was the last time you celebrated their efforts in this work? It may be time for a Praise Spark.

What percentage of your work do you find demotivating? What about this work do you find demotivating? Knowing what is actively demotivating your team or causing them stress can help you to mitigate this kind of work, solve for a solution, or at least emphasize the “why” behind this work.  Be sure to express gratitude for their efforts, especially in this area.

As a Manager, you are the first line of defense against turnover.  By supporting your team, investing time into their experience, and showing that you care about their wellbeing, you’re keeping the human element in their development.  Initiate the conversation with a Spark today!
